Manchester Art Gallery<\/a>\u2019s rooftop became a home for bees in 2011. Inspired by an article about the work of Steve Benbow, beekeeper for Tate’s Modern and Britain<\/a>, John Mouncey proposed a scheme to the gallery\u2019s new director, Dr. Maria Balshaw<\/a> that beehives be placed on the roof the gallery and Whitworth Art Gallery<\/a> as a way of creating a linkage between the two places.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” make_fullwidth=”off” use_custom_width=”off” width_unit=”on” use_custom_gutter=”off” gutter_width=”3″ padding_mobile=”off” allow_player_pause=”off” parallax=”off” parallax_method=”off” make_equal=”off” parallax_1=”off” parallax_method_1=”off” column_padding_mobile=”on” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial”]<\/p>\n John had no prior experience with bees but, together with John Peel, they undertook training with Manchester District & Beekeepers Association at Heaton Park<\/a> before setting up the first hive in 2011. Over time, the number of hives grew to three, with the honey generated being sold in the gallery shop as Bee-Raphaelite Honey and the wax made into lip balm. In addition, a wild flower garden was added to the roof, which formed part of Manchester\u2019s River of Flowers<\/a>, an urban gardening project started in 2008 which has grown into a worldwide scheme.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial”]<\/p>\n Other related projects include The Lost Gardens of Manchester<\/a>, a garden installation 2015 outside the gallery\u2019s entrance created by the National Trust.
