Similar to the Oddfellows Beehive<\/a>, the following is not directly about the Manchester Bee but it\u2019s interesting to look at similar iconography that developed from around the same time period.<\/i><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve not been able to pinpoint exactly when it was adopted as a symbol, but it is closely tied to the movement for many years, as highlighted by a visit the Rochdale Pioneers Museum<\/a>.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.24.1″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.24.1″][et_pb_image src=”http:\/\/manchesterbe.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Rochdale-Pioneers-Museum-Copy.jpg” _builder_version=”3.24.1″][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.24.1″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.24.1″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.24.1″ min_height=”154px”]

On 21st\u00a0December 1844, the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society opened their store selling food items. While there had been previous cooperative groups, the Society proved to be the starting point for the modern movement, with their set of ideals for the operation of cooperatives \u2013 the Rochdale Principles \u2013 being adopted by future societies.<\/p>\n

When the Society moved into new, purpose-built central premise in 1867, a large beehive adorned the exterior of the building.<\/p>\n

While the 1867 central premise no longer exists, the beehive still does. I highly recommend a visit the museum, which details the begins of the society, the history of the cooperatives movement and its worldwide influence. It\u2019s been headquarted in Manchester for many years, originally at the CIS Tower but more recently at One Angel Square since 2013. During the design phase for the new headquarters, the architects drew inspiration from Co-operative symbols, leading to an initial design based on a beehive.
